Sweet Things to Do in Morris County, NJ: The Ultimate Dessert Tour

For the foodies out there who favor dessert, we bring you the best that Morristown and Chester in Morris County, NJ have to offer when you crave a little something sweet.  Treat yourself after a long hike or bike ride through our beautiful countryside, and re-fuel with the food pyramid’s stepchildren—cakes, pies and ice cream.  Here is a list of our favorite dessert stops in Morristown and Chester.  Tip:  hours and days subject to change, so we suggest you call ahead.  Warning:  no calorie counting!

Morristown

The Artist Baker

The Artist Baker in Morristown is a specialty bakery and café located off a main street in Morristown.  Owner Andrea Lekberg opened her shop in 2009 offering scones, tarts, cookies and cakes from her warm oven in the heart of Morristown.  Custom special occasion cakes are a good portion of her business.  Charming indoor and outdoor seating is available (post-Covid) for breakfast and lunch or there’s take-out and catering.  On the menu are delicious sandwiches and salads, and so many pastries from which to choose.  The Artist Baker is at 16 Cattano Avenue, 973-267-5540.  Tuesday to Saturday 8 am to 3 pm.  Kitchen closes at 2 pm.

Enjou Chocolat

This chocolate shop in Morristown has been in business since 1983.  Wendy Taffet, who studied pharmacy, developed her own recipes and has been satisfying Morris County “sweet tooths” for decades.  High quality truffles, chocolate-coated fruits and nuts, special-themed shapes are available for purchase or to order.  In summer, the shop serves up ice cream topped with Enjou’s own chocolate syrup.  Creative wedding favors and corporate gifts made of chocolate are available, as is shipping. There is also a line of “healthy” recipe chocolate bars at 8 DeHart Street, 973-993-9090.  Monday to Friday 10 am to 6 pm, Saturday 10 am to 5 pm and closed on Sunday.

Savour Café and Eatery

A newcomer on our Ultimate Morris County Dessert Tour is the Savour Cafe.  Brandy Cojocaru opened her café in Morristown in March 2020, and with her healthy menu and scrumptious desserts captured the hearts of locals quickly during the pandemic.  This café serves food all day in a casual atmosphere with the freshest, local ingredients.  Leave room for the cakes and cookies for dessert, and take home some French macarons (which Brandy also sells on Amazon.)  Located at 40 Morris Street, 973-343-5560.  Open every day 11 am to 7 pm.  Catering available at Savour Café.

Just Jersey

Say hello to Paul and Tina when you stop by their store in Morristown.  Selling only products made in New Jersey, their “sweet treat collection” includes Jersey Girl chocolate bars, New Jersey-shaped solid chocolate, toffee, saltwater taffy, biscotti, peanut butter filled chocolates, and hot chocolate “bombs.”  While you are checking out the best of their New Jersey sweets, browse through all the other “Made in New Jersey” unique gift and decorative artisan items.  Just Jersey is located at 163 South Street, 973-590-2820.  Shipping available.  Open Monday to Saturday 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday 10 am to 5 pm.

Chester

Taylor’s Ice Cream Parlor

Taylor’s in Chester is run by Marissa, a former employee who took over the shop in 2017.  Taylor’s is open everyday and all year round.  Featuring 48 flavors of hard and soft-serve home-made ice cream, as well as frozen yogurt, milkshakes and sundaes, Taylor’s has something for everyone!  You can find beautiful, home-made cakes for any and all occasions.  Cakes are available for in-store purchase or by custom order.  Taylor’s will also make you a cake of soft-serve yogurt frosted in soft-serve yogurt if you want a lighter version of summer’s best cold treat.  Great for birthday parties, and they give tours of their ice-cream making operation.  Located at 18 Main Street, 908-879-5363.  Open Monday to Thursday from 1 to 9 pm, Friday and Saturday 11 am to 10 pm, and Sunday 11 am to 9 am.

The Maple Shop

Another sweet thing to do in Morris County is to visit The Maple Shop in Chester which is aimed at Vermont Lovers.  The Rybkiewicz family recently opened this Chester, New Jersey specialty food store stocked with products from their Red Leaf Hollow Farm in Richford, Vermont.  The store is filled with syrups, spreads, jellies, truffles, maple candies and toppings plus artisan foods and gift items.  Located at 105 Main Street, ask for Jon.  They also have many products made by veterans who they are proud to support.  Call 908-955-7043 to shop in store, or online at mapleshopnj.com  Open Wednesday 10 am to 3 pm, Thursday/Friday/Saturday 10 am to 6 pm and Sunday 10 am to 4 pm.

The Black River Candy Shoppe

Black River Candy Shoppe carries 1,000 classic candy varieties, many you’ll  remember from your childhood, from jellybeans to Pop Rocks, from Sugar Babies to candy necklaces and even Pez!  How about some of those wax fangs?  The owner, Steve, has been selling candy for 22 years at this charming Chester location. There’s a country ambience in the antiques-decorated store and much of the candy is stowed in oak barrels, and best of all, they ship orders. Black River Candy is located in the back of a large parking lot at 44 Main Street.  Look for a red standalone pole, a barn type building, at the back of the lot.  Call:  908-879-1233. J. Emanuel Chocolatier

This shop is for people who are passionate about chocolate with the most sophisticated tastes.  From richly flavored truffles, exclusive silken wine truffles, to classic Chester Butter Crunch, fondants, dipped fruits and more, these chocolates are handmade in the European tradition with the best cocoas, essences, and fresh ingredients for chocolate connoisseur.
