Guest Speaker: Oliver St. Clair Franklin

St. Peter’s Episcopal Church welcomes all to join us during Black History Month for a Free Exclusive Screening of Slavery in the Age of Revolution.  The film examines the Transatlantic Slave Trade at the turbulent end of the 18th century through the lens of Balliol College’s collections.

The 50-minute film takes the long view from 15th-century encounters between established African societies and emerging European nation states to the legacies of Transatlantic slavery in our present, it foregrounds narratives of resistance to slavery and the voices of enslaved people, as well as exploring how slavery was viewed by those consuming its products in Europe.

Guest Speaker Oliver St. Clair Franklin was a student Balliol College, Oxford and elected an Honorary Fellow in 2019. He collaborated with the College to produce this film on the college’s response to the transatlantic slave trade in the 1790’s and the legacy to the college today.  He will be available for Q&A following the screening as well.
