MANSION IN MAY 2020-TYVAN HILL
MORRISTOWN, NJ, June 25, 2019 – The Women’s Association for Morristown Medical Center (WAMMC) is pleased to announce its 19th Mansion in May Designer Showhouse and Gardens at Tyvan Hill located in New Vernon, New Jersey. Tyvan Hill will open its doors to the public as the Mansion in May for 2020.
The 10,000 square foot U-shaped brick and stone house mansion was designed by the prominent New York architectural firm of Peabody, Wilson & Brown for John Wesley Castles Jr. and his wife, Dorothea Bradford Smith, and built between 1928 and 1929. Tyvan Hill is typical of the large country residences built in New Vernon during the 1920s and features beautiful details, such as a curved staircase, paneling and elegant moldings, as well as an outdoor pool and pool house. In 1931, the Architectural League of New York awarded its silver medal to Peabody, Wilson & Brown for the firm’s designs of a group of country residences, prominently including Tyvan Hill.
John Wesley Castles Jr., a graduate of Yale and Columbia Law School, was first a Wall Street lawyer with the firm of Lord, Day & Lord and later an investment banker with the firm that became Smith, Barney & Co. He left the banking firm in 1941 to re-join the United States Army at the start of World War II. With the rank of colonel, he first served in the Tanks Corps at Fort Knox, Kentucky, and then served as deputy assistant chief of staff of the European Theater of Operations, based in England. Earlier, during World War I, as an Army captain, Castles served under then-colonel, later general, George S. Patton.
Dorothea Bradford Smith Castles was a daughter of former Vermont Governor Edward Curtis Smith and granddaughter of J. Gregory Smith, who was governor of Vermont during the Civil War.
Revisiting the country elegance of yesteryear, Tyvan Hill will once again be brought to life through the design inspirations of some of the metropolitan area’s leading interior designers and will feature approximately 40 design spaces, as well as multiple beautifully designed landscape areas.
Mansion in May 2020 will be open to the public from May 1 to May 31, 2020 and will be available for private tours and private events. Advanced tickets will be available online and at select local retail locations in early 2020.
