Lake Hopatcong: Jewel of the Mountain

June 14 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

The Morristown and Morris Township Library’s North Jersey History and Genealogy Center presents Marty Kane’s Zoom presentation’s Lake Hopatcong: Jewel of the Mountain. Marty, the President of the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum and Chair of the Lake Hopatcong Foundation, and co-author, with his wife Laura, of several books about Lake Hopatcong and its environs, will illustrate why Lake Hopatcong was “The Jewel of the Mountains.” The lake was a major northeast resort in an age before jets, super highways and air conditioning. The high altitude of the lake and its close proximity to large cities made it the perfect summertime destination.

After the beginning of train service to Lake Hopatcong in the 1880s, accommodations and attractions were quickly built for tourists at the popular getaway. From grand hotels to cottages to simple campsites, New Jersey’s largest lake soon had it all, including live jazz performances, dance halls, vaudeville acts, theme parties, boat races, water carnivals, beauty pageants and amusement parks. At its peak in the 1920s, the lake welcomed thousands each year, including leaders in government, industry and entertainment.

Come back to an evening at Lake Hopatcong in the Roaring 20s!
