MONTVILLE TOWNSHIP HISTORIC SOCIETY PRESENTS
“Along Yesterday’s Bloomfield Avenue”

“Along Yesterday’s Bloomfield Avenue” will be the subject of the next Montville Township Historic Society’s program, April 12(Monday), 7:30 p.m. in the Montville Township Senior House, 356 Main, Montville.

Phil Jaeger, author, historian and former teacher, will present a program on Bloomfield Avenue tracing Bloomfield Avenue from Newark into Morris county in centuries past. People love to hear Phil Jaeger’s presentations and he has developed several programs over the years. His repertoire includes “Castles of New Jersey”, “In Search of the Morris Canal”, “The Passaic River :81 Miles of History” and other favorites.

Bloomfield Avenue began as a colonial road; named for the Bloomfield family whose family members served New Jersey during the American Revolution as Generals, but also as Governor and chancellor of New Jersey. The road partially comes from the Newark –Pompton Turnpike, a toll road created in the mid 18th century but some parts are older and evolved from a dirt road into a paved road. Always well traveled, yesterday as well as today the road passes through towns such as Newark, Belleville, Bloomfield, Glen Ridge, Montclair, Verona and Pine Brook. As one travels Bloomfield Avenue one can see the centuries pass by as they drive by churchs, Branch Brook Park, the Pequannock Gate Tower, and tourists points of interest.

The program is presented at the Montville Township Historic Society April 12 (Monday) program, 7:30 p.m. in the Montville Township Senior House, 356 Main, Montville.
All are invited to come. Refreshments will be served.
Nominations are sought for the 2010 Ten Most Endangered Sites in Morris County list. The Morris County Trust for Historic Preservation, the Morris County Historical Society, the Morris County Tourism Bureau, and the Morris County Heritage Commission partner to publish an annual list of the Ten Most Endangered Sites in Morris County. The list helps to raise public interest and awareness of these sites, often sparking efforts to protect the historic places that give each of our towns its distinctive character.

Local citizens, groups, and organizations will help decide which historic buildings will be on Morris County’s list of ten most endangered sites for 2010 and are encouraged to nominate sites for consideration. Local residents are able to provide valuable information about sites facing a range of threats. Each year, some sites are saved, some are lost, and others remain on the list.

Threat conditions under which an historic site may be nominated include: lack of local ordinance, inappropriate zoning, lack of funding, vandalism, neglect, development, degradation of context, and lack of recognition. Eligible endangered sites are not limited to buildings. Only Morris County properties may be nominated. Photographs are required. Digital images are preferred on CD-ROM (if emailing photos, individual photo files must be 56KB or smaller). Photographic prints will not be returned.

For a 2010 nomination form, visit www.morrisheritage.org or contact the Morris County Tourism Bureau at lbensley@morristourism.org; or (973) 631-5151.
