Santa Claus is “Caught” by Thomas Nast

Thomas Nast, America’s greatest illustrator, created our image of Santa Claus in 1863. Santa is a jolly elf-like character from the North Pole; Nast had the same personality but lived in Morristown, NJ. For years, he created images of Santa Claus for America’s largest newspaper, Harper’s Weekly, drawing many of them in his studio at his Morristown home. Since legend says Santa was not to be seen or heard in his visits to children’s homes, Nast settled the matter with his wonderful image “Caught” in 1892.
