Heritage Tourism Task Force Schdeules 2nd Public Hearing

Meeting to be held at Liberty State Park's Terminal Building

TRENTON, NJ, Sept 17, 2007. The New Jersey Heritage Tourism Task Force

(NJHTTF) invites local heritage tourism partners to the second of three scheduled public hearings. Specifically, NJHTTF is interesting in learning how to improve, elevate, and promote heritage tourism efforts in order to create a comprehensive heritage tourism master plan for New Jersey. Participants will be given five minutes to speak and are asked to submit five written copies of their testimony.

The Task Force will meet at the historic Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal (CRRNJ), which sits prominently at the north end of Liberty State Park, Jersey City. Immigrants arriving on our shores from 1892-1954, having sailed past the Statue of Liberty and gone through processing at Ellis Island, bought train tickets to a new home at the Terminal.

The public meeting will begin with a brief update from Judith R. McAlpin, President of Save Ellis Island, Inc. The nonprofit SEI reopened the historic Ellis Island Ferry Building in April, in partnership with the National Park Service. The restoration of this first building to be opened on the New Jersey portion of Ellis Island began with exterior work in 2000. The project was funded by a combination of federal and New Jersey state funds and private financing, including substantial grants from the Hudson County Open Space Trust Fund, "Save America's Treasures," Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation and Tourism Cares. Ms. McAlpin will be joined by Dorothy W. Hartman, Vice President, Programs and Planning, Ellis Island Institute.
Take NJ Turnpike exit 14B Jersey City and follow the signs to Liberty State Park (Morris Pesin Drive, Jersey City NJ 07305; (201) 915-3400)
